MoCo Managing Partner: Large-Firm Lawyers Attracted to Mid-Size Law Firms

The combination of large law firms' high billing rates and their restrictions on handling smaller matters has contributed to a strong market for large-firm lawyers moving laterally to midsized law firms, reports the New York Law Journal, citing conversations with leaders of midsized New York firms and others. The recently published article quotes Morrison Cohen Chairman and Managing Partner David A. Scherl, who noted that the firm has been getting “plenty of knocks on our door”. One important reason, he suggests, is the “frequent and common lament of lateral partner candidates from large firms” that their firms push work from their middle market clients to younger, but still expensive, associates, even though the clients want partner attention.
