Morrison Cohen Named To The National Law Journal’s Midsize Hot List

New York, NY, June 2, 2014 – The National Law Journal has selected Morrison Cohen LLP for inclusion in its 2014 Midsize Hot List. The list identifies 20 mid-sized law firms from across the nation that “are succeeding at a time when many of their bigger competitors are struggling amid high headcounts and overhead” and “understand that it takes more than lower fees to bring in and retain business.”

Under the headline “Flat Structure, Solid Foundation,” the publication profiled Morrison Cohen's “flat organizational structure” that “gives it a solid foundation to handle work for the heavyweights.” The article highlighted the firm's nearly equal ratio of partners to nonpartners and billing rates in the mid-$400 to mid-$600 range that “undercuts competitors in the firm's largest practice areas: corporate capital markets, including representing private-equity sponsors and investment funds, followed by commercial litigation.”

As Stephen Pierce, global head of equity capital markets at Goldman, Sachs & Co., said of MoCo's partners: “They're working at a midcap firm and bringing a largecap mentality.” The firm's work for Goldman includes corporate transactions and litigation.

The Journal also focused on Morrison Cohen's litigation practice, highlighting that it recently obtained a dismissal of an antitrust case alleging that its clients had conspired to monopolize racing and gambling in New York State's Catskills region.

Solid and creative lawyering is not, however, all that enables the firm to succeed, according to the article. As David Scherl, the firm's Chairman and Managing Partner said, Morrison Cohen's partners are intimately involved in and knowledgeable about the business aspects of running the law firm including firm finances: “It's empowering, but it's also motivating,” Scherl said.
