In Memory of Stephen A. Cohen

We are saddened to share the news that our friend and former partner, Steve Cohen, passed away on April 28, 2022, at age 84.

Steve was a partner at the firm for more than 20 years, having joined what was then Morrison Cohen Singer & Weinstein in 1989. Previously, he had been a name partner at Friedlander Gaines Cohen Rosenthal & Rosenberg, a firm that specialized in insurance coverage, corporate law, commercial litigation, and labor law. Steve was a member of Morrison Cohen’s executive committee for many years, had a significant practice and client base, and was a mentor to many young lawyers. His career as a practicing attorney spanned from 1962 until his retirement in 2012.

Steve was born and raised in Flatbush, Brooklyn, a lifelong point of pride. He had a strong Jewish identity and spent many years as General Counsel to the Anne Frank Center USA. He was committed to educating young adults about what happens when hatred and prejudice are allowed to flourish.

Steve graduated from Brown University and received his law degree from New York University. He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Eileen, and is survived by his sons, David, Peter and Jonathan, and five grandchildren.

Jeffrey Englander, Partner and Co-Chair of Morrison Cohen’s Labor & Employment Practice, who started working with Steve as a young associate and remained close friends with him for almost 50 years, remembered him as “a force to be reckoned with and a wonderful colleague.”

May Steve’s memory be a blessing for us all.
