Randi Mason Quoted in ABA’s Law Practice Today on Women’s Business Development Initiatives

Partner Randi Mason was quoted in American Bar Association’s Law Practice Today, in an article entitled “Are Women’s Business Development Initiatives Still Needed?” The article explored whether women still need a gender-specific approach to business development, given that women lawyers make up 28% of law firm partners, just over 50% of law firm associates and 39% of lawyers overall.

Randi, co-chair of Morrison Cohen’s Corporate Practice, was among several law firm partners and business development professionals interviewed for the article. Most agreed that focusing business development efforts on clients’ individual interests vs. their gender leads to more meaningful connections. However, women’s support and mentorship remain important.

“Women’s groups provide a place for women to ask questions that are specific to women,” Randi said. “For example, in general, women have been socialized to be less up front around business development, and the women’s initiative program [at Morrison Cohen] provides an opportunity to mentor women lawyers in that area.” Randi said she also appreciates the atmosphere at women’s conferences, which is “warmer and more welcoming” than enormous industry conferences where the vibe can be “unapproachable.”
