Y. David Scharf to Accept Honor from Auschwitz Jewish Center Foundation
Co-Managing Partner Y. David Scharf will accept an honor from The Auschwitz Jewish Center Foundation (AJCF), an affiliate of the Museum of Jewish Heritage, on behalf of the Scharf Family of Oshpitzin. He will receive the honor at a gala reception held at the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum in New York City on June 2, featuring special guest Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger.
For Scharf, receiving this honor is deeply personal given his family’s longstanding connection to Oshpitzin, the town located next to Auschwitz. “Since the mid-1700s, my family lived in the town that became synonymous with the nearby death camps,” said Scharf, who notes that the Auschwitz Jewish Center Foundation focuses on what Oshpitzin was like as a vibrant town, compared with how it was impacted by the destruction of hatred. “Never has such a place been more important,” said Scharf.
“I am very pleased to accept this honor in remembrance of my family legacy of life in Oshpitzin,” Scharf said, “and in an effort to educate in the battle against hate and human atrocity.”
Since 2000, AJCF has educated against antisemitism and all forms of prejudice and discrimination. Applying the lessons of the Holocaust, particularly the experience of the Jewish community of Oshpitzin, the Foundation teaches the devastating impact of hate and our collective responsibility to fight it.
